The oldest documents in the collection date back to the 1930s. In that time, Rwanda and Burundi were colonised by Belgium and both countries formed a single colony called Ruanda-Urundi. As a result, some documents in the collection were sent from Belgium and some documents belonging to Rwanda are currently kept in Burundi, Belgium, Germany, Congo and other countries. The National Archive has different collections to help the public to find documents created during colonial times as well as since, including telegrams, administrative reports, correspondence and action plans.
